To help out his sister, Scott moved to the small town of Montgomery, where there isn’t much to do and no one for him to date. Well, there’s one other openly gay man in town—Henry ‘Cole’ Porter, a widower who runs the school library, but after one drunken night together, Cole has kept his distance. Scott is used to that. He spends a lot of time working out to look good, and from the slow way he talks and the frat house atmosphere at the fire station where he works, it’s easy to assume he’s stupid. Most people are happy to admire his body and assume that’s all he wants from them, and deep down, Scott is too afraid to try asking for more.

Which is why sweet, romantic Scott has been secretly pining after Cole for months when some of the town’s nosier residents decide Cole has been single long enough. They have a plan to throw every successful, smart, professional gay man in a thirty-mile radius Cole’s way, whether he likes it or not. Their list of candidates doesn’t include Scott, and Scott’s insecurities prevent him from stepping forward—even when it seems as though Cole is asking him to.

Cole is everything Scott isn’t; highly educated, stylish, with refined tastes. He’s also stubborn and sarcastic, and not nearly as smart about the workings of his own heart as people might think. It might take a lot of the wrong men for him to realize the right one has been in front of him all along.

Hottie Scotty and Mr Porter edition by R Cooper Lyn Forester Romance eBooks

As one of R. Cooper’s big fans, I was interested to read a straightforward, small-town romance by her that didn’t involve magic or supernatural beings. What I discovered is that Cooper, denied the use of shimmering wings or werewolf courtship rituals, is a lovely romance writer. She is gentle, insistent, and creates stories with an exquisite sense of subtle detail—both physical and emotional.

Hottie Scotty is Scott Yun, a Korean-American firefighter who moved to a small town in California to help his divorced sister with her two young kids. He, being almost thirty and a certain kind of gay man, is of course obsessed with his body and eating healthy. Unwillingly outed by the town’s gossipy knitting club, he has found his comfortable niche in small town America. His main problem is that he doesn’t see himself the way other see him.

Mr. Porter is Henry “Cole” Porter, the bowtie-wearing librarian at the town’s elementary school. Cole is 42 and widowed—his husband Eric having died suddenly some years after they moved to town.

The town gossips want to get Cole dating again. But Scott is just a party boy, a Grindr kind of guy. He’s not on their list. He is dismissed as beauty and no brains, because Cole is an intellectual, a smart man with sophisticated tastes.

And that’s it really. The whole book takes place through Scott’s eyes, as he interacts with various townspeople and his sister Angie; and, of course, with Cole. There are moments of gentle humor and silliness; and these are balanced with moments of intense, controlled emotion. There is something Jane Austen-like about the delicate, carefully calibrated feelings with which Cooper fills this simple story. It is all about the place and what Scott feels about this town, himself, and the people he has chosen to live with. Nothing much happens, except that two lonely men’s lives change completely in spite of the well-meaning interference of people who pretend to know them, but really just want to push them around. See? Jane Austen all the way.

Hottie Scotty and Mr Porter edition by R Cooper Lyn Forester Romance eBooks Reviews

3.5 Stars

I liked this romance very much. It looked carefully at two very different men seeing their way to be together and in love. The conflicts are mainly internal but we do have a lot of blocking going on.

Scott is younger and shy. He is very good looking and thus people see him as shallow and not bright even though he is clearly kind and smart.

Cole is a widower and funny. He is older and more established and people think he is too smart for Scott.

However, Scott and Cole are very attuned. I love those moments in the book where Cooper manages to show us just how right these two are for each other.

Cole has to see Scott and Scott needs to value himself more but they get there. As with most of Cooper's books lack of communication is a huge issue (quit it!) and the story needs to be longer after the couple really connects.

There is a weird aside in this book with all the straight women matchmaking and basically objectifying the gay men in town which is very meta to the Male/Male Romance dynamics that is worth a look as well.
"Hottie Scotty" really does make a person think. He's literally a fireman who loves working out so he's built like a wall---but no one sees him for anything other than the physical. I know a lot of service men in various professions who all love being fawned over for keeping in shape. R. Cooper made me wonder how many of them are only accepting the praise they get for keeping in shape because they think they can't be praised for anything else.

There's so much depth in this short read for both Scott Yun, fireman and resident town hottie, and Cole Porter, librarian and resident gay widower, I almost couldn't believe it was under 150 pages. I felt I really got to know both of these men. It takes a lot of skill to convey characters and a world in so short a span; I'm never disappointed in Cooper's world-building.

I'm so glad for the happiness Cole and Scott wind up edging towards having together at the end of this piece; I love a good happy ending. I hope people give this short a try for a chance to see an opposites-attract relationship where both parties have their own insecurities even if they aren't obviously apparent.
I enjoyed the story of Scott and Cole very much. Scott is a fireman who, though he exercises regularly, is not obsessed with his handsome buff looks and is actually very sweet. Cole, a widower whose husband has passed away several years ago, runs the school library. He is a snippy, bossy little man who "Hottie Scotty" has fallen very hard for. Sadly, Cole and the neighborhood busybodies assume that because Scott talks about his exercises and diet regimen when he gets nervous around people, that is all there is to him.
What made me smile during this love story was the way in which Cole learned that there was a whole lot more to Scott than his outward appearance. Once Cole begins to focus his attention on Scott, Scott suddenly realizes that it is possible for there to be love between two very different personalities .https//images-na.ssl-images-/images/I/51ECbP26-0L._SS300_.jpg
Scott reminds me of Theo in 'A beginner's guide'...spectacularly sweet with no clue how special they are. Like Theo, Scott is beautiful but the best parts are under the surface - fortunately Cole is well aware of Scott's appeal on all levels. This is a great story of two guys yearning and pining and accidentally on purpose being in the right place at the right time to catch a glimpse of the object of their affection. I loved how ferociously protective and careful Cole is of Scott from the very beginning, how observant and perceptive Scott is under all the pretty and I thoroughly enjoyed thinking of many eviscerating things to say to everyone in the book who is so unbelievably rude and dismissive of Scott.
